Area Highlights

Neighborhoods:

Charlotte has several districts that offer dining, shopping and entertainment options to visitors. Uptown is Charlotte's central district. Fortune 500 companies, government offices, a number of museums, restaurants and nightclubs can be found in the Uptown district. NoDa is considered the city's Historic Arts District and is packed with galleries, unique shops and restaurants. South End has been converted to a somewhat upscale entertainment and cultural district. It also offers galleries, children-oriented shops and a burgeoning design industry.

Arts and Museums:

The Mint Museums consists of the Mint Museum of Art and the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, both housed in the former Charlotte Mint. The Levine Museum of the New South introduces visitors to the South's history, culture and influences. Discovery Place is a nationally acclaimed children's museum. Other notable sites include the Afro-American Cultural Center, the Billy Graham Library and the Carolinas Aviation Museum.

Sports:

NASCAR is big in Charlotte. The Lowe's Motor Speedway hosts a number of events. The Charlotte Bobcats and Carolina Panthers make their home in Charlotte. Golf is a perennial sport in the Carolinas, with the Charlotte area offering a significant number of fine courses. The new U.S. National Whitewater Center is also in Charlotte.

Historic Sites:

Southern history comes alive at the Historic Latta Plantation, the Historic Rosedale Plantation and Historic Rural Hill Farm. Other significant sites include the Reed Gold Mine (first gold find in the U.S.) and Kings Mountain National Military Park.
